I decided to test this listening model of rapport and personal power. He had the window seat and I had the aisle. We began to talk and I asked about his destination, job, city of residence and so on. The more he told, the more I asked about him…how he got into that business, where he went to school, his hobbies and more.  So, he was speaking and I was listening. When he asked about me, I gave light answers and switched back to him—his family, his brilliant daughter, how he met his wife…on and on. I knew volumes about him and he knew nothing about me.

When we landed in Cincinnati and stood to get our luggage from the compartment above, he gave me his card, shook my hand and said these words:  “I really enjoyed talking with you; you are a very interesting person!” My test had worked brilliantly.

Do you want relationships, magnetism and influence with people? Stop being so interesting. Become much more interested and others will find you interesting.

Questions: What if I happen to be born with a personality that is bubbly, talkative and outgoing? And won’t there be times when I miss opportunities by not showcasing my strengths?
